The price of electricity in Spain has touched historical highs during the first half of January, unleashing a new political storm that has entangled the opposition and the Government. Although the minister spokesperson María Jesús Montero already defended that it was a specific increase, this time it was the fourth vice president and Minister of Ecological Transition, Teresa Ribera, who gave more details on the matter. He did so at the press conference after the Council of Ministers. In it, Ribera has recognized that in the price of electricity "there may be fluctuations from one day to the next , hours in which the price is higher or lower than in the hour immediately before or after." But he has warned that it is "important to take as a reference the evolution in the quarter or in the annual periods." In this way, Teresa Ribera has insisted that " an isolated and significant piece of information is a piece of information that can distort the overall picture of what we should pay or what we should pay attention to.
The minister has stated that if an "exercise of taking a certain distance" is carried out, it will be possible to verify that "the price of energy between 2018 and 2020 has fallen by 40%." This decrease, the minister has defended, is due to "the progressive incorporation into our energy system of technologies with low variable costs, close to 0, or the reduction in Europe Cell Phone Number List consumption, which is due to savings or efficiency." Likewise, Ribera has recognized that the reduction in consumption during 2020 — "a drop of 6%" — is a consequence of a "declining demand" associated with the coronavirus pandemic. Ribera has also emphasized that the price dictated by the wholesale market "is not the only element that is included in the invoice.
Together with the price of energy, we must add the fixed costs of distribution, meters, taxes or historical costs that have been accumulating and for which the Government has already proposed creating a National Fund for the Sustainability of the Electrical System ". The electricity auction: this is how the price of electricity is set in Spain The minister has indicated that the "price tension" that has been experienced in the wholesale market during the first weeks of 2021 "has to do with the slow incorporation of the supply of gas from Algeria in relation to the accelerated increase in demand in Spain ". She has also blamed the situation on skyrocketing demand in Asian markets. In addition to the price tensions, the minister has detailed that she even caused "methane tankers destined for our country to be diverted to Asian countries.
